    “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” – Ralph Waldo EmersonA few days ago, on one of those glorious fall days where the sun felt warm but the shade carried a chill, I decided to take a walk. A mid-day walk outdoors felt like a rare treat, so I chose to go without earbuds, without messages, and without the obligations that usually play in my ears. It turned out to be a gift.I took special notice of nature—it was just her and me, alone on a beautiful day—and it was lovely. I could hear the autumn leaves rustling in the light breeze, and I noticed trees that didn’t just grow straight and tall but also twisted and crooked, as though they had bent to survive whatever challenges life had thrown their way. They were still beautiful, even though they had surrendered to growing in a way that was different from what might have been originally intended.Some trees were small and delicate but brave nonetheless, displaying just as many vibrant colors as the towering, majestic maples. In a spot near the ditch, where no other trees were nearby, I saw a little cedar. It looked like a plucky little thing, and I couldn’t help but feel a special fondness for it. I can’t help loving cedars! (Cedars seem hardy, as if they have enough heart to endure untoward things and are willing to thrive wherever they are planted.) Moss grew in low, puffy patches over the banks of the ditches, and a variety of wild plants and flowers added to the natural beauty. It felt calm and peaceful, everything existing together in harmony.Nature has always felt that way to me—like a respite from a busy world or a cluttered mind. But why is that so? Is nature’s only secret patience, or is there something deeper at play? I know that nature, unlike us humans, has no choice. The Creator set it in motion, and it follows its cycle of life and death, destruction and renewal, freeze and thaw, dormancy and growth. But isn’t that where its beauty lies? The acceptance in the storms, peace in the chaos, and a constant forward movement toward growth and healing. There’s the strength to grow tall even with crooked branches or twisted trunks. There’s the deep silence of frozen roots and bare branches. There’s the absence of birdsongs in the silver Winter followed by the tender, hopeful green shoots and joyful blooms of spring. There’s the sometimes lush green fields followed by the parched landscape of summer, longing for rain and rejoicing when it finally comes. And then there’s Autumn, with its glorious colors—a beautiful bridge between seasons, calling us to relax and trust that the coming winter will bring its own hidden growth, just as it always does.Unseen beneath the surface, roots grow stronger in the cold, barren days. Isn’t that much like our own lives? A cycle of pain and surrender, joy and reaping. A song of life and death, tears and laughter. We grow differently than we imagined—crooked branches where we thought we would stand straight and strong. We find ourselves planted in places we never dreamed of, pruned in ways we would never have chosen for ourselves.Though we have choices, the grand design of the Creator is not controlled by our human decisions. Nature’s great secret is not just patience—it is surrender. Complete harmony and trust in the One who made it. And that is why nature resonates so deeply with our souls.It calls us to remember who we truly belong to in this noisy, impatient world. It reminds us that rest and peace are just as important as the goals and tasks we strive to complete.
