    If Heaven Had RésumésSuppose God was sitting at His desk, waiting for the angel on duty to hand Him the latest updates on the lives of His humans. The angel shuffles through a thick sheaf of papers, reading out loud various tasks carried out on the earthly side of the kingdom. Each person was faced with writing God a short summary of the task they had faithfully carried out, what they had done with the talents He had given them, the burdens He had allowed, and the trials that came their way. He would record in His book of life as He reads through them.The angel shuffles papers rapidly, and as he does so, he adds some of the papers to a stack on one side of the desk. God asks him why he is separating out those papers. The angel replies, “Well, they’re all just moms.” God raises an eyebrow. “JUST moms?” He asks. “Yes,” says the angel, “listen to this one.” He reads, “I don’t even know what I did today, God. I just took care of my family. I made three meals, packed three lunches, and put four loads of laundry through. I washed mud splatters off the wall inside the house. How does that even happen? Also, I helped with homework. I took a new mom a meal for supper and my own family ate take-out pizza. It felt so mundane. I want to do important things for you, God, but today was not that day, I guess.”The angel looks at God and says, “They’re all like this one. They are just doing a bunch of earthly tasks. They seem to not know if any of it is worth it. What is wrong with them? Are they not hearing Your voice at all?” God answered, “Absolutely, they are. They are doing what they are supposed to do.” The angel looks doubtful. God continues, “Mothers are some of the most important people on Earth. Think about it. They give life and then they sustain that life. You don’t see half of what those women did today. The scraped knees they bandaged. The endless drinks and snacks they handed out. The little hands they held walking to the mailbox. The way they laughed good-naturedly when they tried to sneak away for a moment, and they were found? The way they went and climbed on that fallen tree because someone HAD to show them something. The way they made time for their husbands, their elderly parents, the friend who called. The ones who had to work to make ends meet and came home and put a meal on the table yet? Haven’t you heard Me say if you do it unto one of the least of these, you have done it unto Me? They do all these things Every. Single. Day. They give life every single day. Why then, would you tell Me they aren’t important?”The angel was silent. “I will agree,” said God, “They seem to have a problem of feeling incompetent, unworthy, and unimportant. I have enough grace for them, no doubt. They do forget to ask sometimes. They do fail sometimes, but they pick up and try again. I try to show them daily I love them. They get so focused on doing the next best thing that they forget to notice sometimes, but if I get really carried away with the sunshine, blue skies, and sunsets, they do usually brighten up and take notice. I love to spend time with them and listen to their troubles. They do seem small to Me, but there is nothing I’d rather do than help them. And look at those little ones I love so much! I love watching them grow. I send them to show love, too, sometimes. Listen how loud they can sing playing church; that tickles Me to no end. See all those flower bouquets on the windowsill, see those chubby arms around their necks, see that teenager grinning like that? All love. Straight-up love. Really, I just love to hide my kingdom in the mundane. Only those willing to find it will do so. It’s not at all hard to find, but easily missed. Mothers are in the best position to see Me daily and even their little ones each have their own angel.”The angel lays the sheaf of papers down in front of God. “I changed my mind.
