    Many WatersIt seems wrong somehow to sit in my cozy chair and type while, within a three-hour drive, our fellow Americans are facing the devastation of their lives. My thoughts and prayers have often been with those whose lives have been ravaged by floodwaters. It’s heartrending to see an area of your state that you love so wrecked and broken. Those floods took a lot. They swept away businesses, homes, farms, animals, roads, bridges, and loved ones. They mercilessly stripped people of everything but the clothes on their backs and left them reeling, now expected to survive. Expected to survive with what is left. What is left? Is there anything?Sometimes, when hardship arrives with its ability to catch us at the knees and knock us down, we come up hollering at the God whom we thought could have done better. This is one of those times that our depraved, exhausted human minds question Him, and we are met with silence. Or so it seems.This morning, in the early hours, I picked up an old, precious Book, and I read in the chapter called *The Song of Solomon*. This is what that wise king had to say so many years ago: “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it” (*The Song of Sol. 8:7*). There it is. The one thing that could not be taken by the raging waters: love. And because God is the creator and the very essence of love, this is the answer that fills the void of His silence. Love is. Love does. Love sacrifices. Love gives.In the aftermath of destruction, God revealing Himself as love can look rather ordinary. He may not appear as the great and mighty superhero we wish He would be. How would we as humans relate to that? We couldn’t. So, rather, He comes in ways that we can do. He lowers Himself to our level and begins the dirty work right alongside us. God as love may look like a muddy pickup rolling in with supplies to feed a crowd. It may look like a mama shopping at Walmart for formula to send up the mountain, a blanket wrapped around a child, or a mama praising Him, though her precious boy was drowned. He may sound like the hooves of pack mules led into remote parts, helicopter rotors getting closer, medicine dropped just in time, or hugs and tears shared on each other’s shoulders. A dump truck full of debris, a hot cup of coffee, just enough gas in the tank.We have seen hundreds of ways already that humans have dropped barriers and just showed each other pure love. Love does. And when a nation comes together in love and reaches out a hand to each other, it is none other than God at work. So why did He not stop the storm? I do not know, and for me to come up with a beautiful platitude won’t get the messy job done. King Solomon said it beautifully enough: Love cannot be quenched or drowned by many waters. Love is what’s left.All I ask is that we look for God in the ordinary, and we’ll find Him. We are not alone. The responsibility each of us has is to reach out with love. If love gives, what am I giving? If love does, what am I doing? If love sacrifices, what am I sacrificing for the betterment of a broken community?Later in the afternoon, I notice my calendar still says September.
